Recently, Silvers et al. (2009b), using numerical simulations, confirmed the existence of a double diffusive magnetic buoyancy instability of a layer of horizontal magnetic field produced by the interaction of a shear velocity field with a weak vertical field. Here, we demonstrate the longer term nonlinear evolution of such an instability in the simulations. We find that a quasi two-dimensional interchange instability rides (or “surfs”) on the growing shear-induced background downstream field gradients. The region of activity expands since three-dimensional perturbations remain unstable in the wake of this upward-moving activity front, and so the three-dimensional nature becomes more noticeable with time.

Research in synthetic materials with controlled transport properties has been inspired by the exquisite selectivity exhibited by natural transmembrane proteins such as ion channels (for selectively transporting ions like sodium and potassium, etc) and aquaporins (for conducting high fluxes of water and excluding ions). In this poster we focus on the transport behavior of highly ordered mesoporous silica thin films synthesized by evaporation induced silica/surfactant self-assembly (EISA). This process allows us to integrate the nanostructures into electronic and fluidic systems by simple coating or spraying procedures, facilitating the characterization of their transport behaviors. Also, the nanocomposite architecture made by this process gives precisely defined pore size, orientation and surface chemistry, allowing tailoring of the motion of molecules and ions transported across the nanochannels. To approach our final goal of understanding and characterizing the transport behavior of our materials, we designed our experiments into three steps: first, we employed focused ion beam (FIB) lithography to drill a single sub-100-nm pore on a substrate support, providing a platform enabling the characterization of trans-membrane behavior of ions/molecules. Second, we developed two EISA approaches to form cubic thin film silica mesophases spanning the FIB-drilled pore. In one approach, we adapted our aerosol-assisted EISA where fusion of liquid crystalline aerosol droplets creates a thin membrane spanning the substrate pore. In the other approach, we modified our synthetic protocol to form ultra thin (20-nm) spanning films by spin-coating. Films with pore sizes ranging from 2nm to 7nm and surface chemistries including –OH, -COOH and –NH2 terminated pore surfaces were prepared in this fashion and integrated to the FIB-drilled single pore substrate support with uniformity to allow tailoring of the motion of ions and molecules. Third, we designed an electrochemical cell in which the FIB-drilled substrates are integrated to enable the measurements of ion fluxes using standard “patch-clamp” instruments. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the transport characteristics of our materials by measuring transmembrane ion fluxes when specific molecules such as DNA are applied, a method relevant to low cost DNA sequencing. Also, by chemically or physically blocking all but one or several membrane pores, we are attempting to measure ion and water transport in individual synthetic nanopores and compare results with natural ion and water channels.

Medium energy (30 keV) focused gallium ion beam exposure of silicon results in a compressive in-plane stress with a magnitude as large as 0.4 GPa. Experiments involve uniform irradiation of thin polysilicon microcantilevers (200 micron length) over a range of dose from 1 x 1016 to 2 x 1018 ions/cm2. The radii of curvature of microcantilevers are measured using white light interferometry before and after each exposure. The residual stress is determined from these radii and other measured properties using Stoney's equation. The large residual stress is attributed to ion beam damage, microstructural changes and implantation.

Focused 30keV gallium ion beam, single-pixel drilling combined with backside particle detection is used to fabricate pores having exit diameters as small as ~11 nm in 200 nm-thick silicon nitride membranes. The backside channelplate detector response obtained about the onset of breakthrough is interpreted by plan-view transmission electron microscopy investigations of hole morphology. Immediately prior to breakthrough, there is a rise in detector signal as the local membrane thickness is reduced. This likely occurs as a result of ion transmission and, possibly, forward sputtering. At the dose required for breakthrough a maximum detector signal is obtained thus providing a potential method for end point detection. The focused ion drilling technique avoids broad area beam exposure methods that are often used to reduce hole diameter to nanometer dimension. In addition, the current approach overcomes difficulties in determining a required dose for breakthrough such as those that arise from an inhomogeneous membrane thickness, redeposition, or ion channeling.

A technology for the direct molding and release of silica micro-optical components in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molds is developed. The objectives of this work are to bypass some of the usual steps in deep x-ray lithography (DXRL) and to determine the suitability of GR650 resin (methylpolysilsequioxane) for molding thick, high aspect ratio structures. The process is initiated by DXRL exposure of PMMA, followed by spin-on glass application, a cure at 85°C to set the shape of the resin, followed by demolding. The cure is below the glass transition temperature of PMMA and the demolding process allows re-use of the mold. There is no need for electroforming in the replication process. PMMA molds with thickness of 250, 350 and 500 um were fabricated by DXRL and standard resist development. A novel metal sacrificial layer technique is used in the release process with initial yield of about 50%. Microoptical elements that were fabricated include lenses, prisms, grating structures and transmission test structures. These components are cured above 400°C after release, to convert the organosilicon polymer to a silica-like material. Weight loss from the high temperature cure was in the range of 15 to 25%, while linear dimensions of the components decreased by about 1%. Composition of the molded, cured structures was measured by XPS depth profiles.
